EXPAND Global GmbH, a provider of E-learning technologies and content solutions, and Epson Europe BV, a leading supplier of value-added projection, printing and scanning solutions, have teamed-up to develop a comprehensive range of bespoke E-Learning training modules to support the rollout of SharePoint 2010 at Epson Europe.
Since 2011, Epson has been using SharePoint as a strategic platform to collect, communicate and share information with teams, projects and organizations. A blended learning approach of classroom training and E-Learning was used during the initial rollout to train Site Visitors and Content Contributors across different geographies.
A second phase of training was aimed at users who required a more detailed understanding of SharePoint, namely “Site Owners”. Epson’s goals for the Site Owners SharePoint training were to:
- Reduce SharePoint classroom training by delivering a comprehensive range of engaging and interactive E-Learning modules, delivered through a fully self-managed learning environment
- Minimize the cost of training for users dispersed across multiple geographies
- Optimize learning flexibility and efficiency
Custom E-Learning Content Requirements
Epson had decided to create a customized curriculum of E-Learning modules to support Site Owner training, covering advanced SharePoint topics on document libraries, lists, views, wikis, workflows, groups, permissions and more. Epson’s key requirements for the E-Learning modules were to:
- Provide engaging instructional design and interactivity to meet the learning needs of advanced users
- Use Epson E-Learning guidelines and standard authoring tools (Articulate and Adobe Captivate)
- Reside on Epson’s Learning Management System for easy and centralized access
Epson decided to team with EXPAND Global as its content development partner for the creation of the E-Learning modules. This decision was based on EXPAND Global’s competence in E-Learning for application training and software rollouts as well as its prior experience in other Epson software training projects.
EXPAND Global worked closely with Epson in a consultancy role, covering the areas of curriculum creation, instructional design, didactical methodology storyboarding and scripting.
For the technical implementation, Articulate authoring software was used to create the E-Learning template framework and conceptual content. Interactive exercises in the form of software simulations were created from Epson’s SharePoint 2010 system using Adobe Captivate.
One of the challenges was to determine how to best embed the Captivate software simulations into the Articulate E-Learning modules. Through a proof-of-concept phase, various options were tested and evaluated at Epson from both a technical and design perspective before deciding upon the right approach.
For the production phase, EXPAND Global utilized both authoring tools to create engaging and highly interactive SharePoint E-Learning modules - on time and on budget.
